Tracking Location in the absence of GPS using smart phones

The objective of this research is to review existing research done on mobile phone based dead reckoning and to integrate algorithms from various existing research together in a single algorithm incorporating step detection, orientation detection, step length calculation, which gives a good estimated location even in the absence of GPS, provided the initial GPS data is available. In this report we have explored implementing a Dead Reckoning System based upon using an accelerometer as a step detector and a compass as a direction detector. We face certain limitations and in this report we explain how such limitations may be overcome using a gyroscope.
